1. Take out garbage in every room, even if not full.
2. Wash all dishes
3. Empty out fridge/freezer (should probably do this before empty trash)
4. Sniff laundry around, clean if stinks (usually isn't laundry but can be if have dirty socks etc..), don't forget to check shoes.
5. Grab a garbage bag, go around your house and pick up ALL garbage and food, throw it out.
6. Clean bathroom (especially toilet and all around toilet)
7. If you have pets check their stuff
8. Check for mold, it can really smell
9. If you have a space heater or other similar appliance check that, sometimes they get really dusty and start smelling
10. Buy some febreeze or some similar product, they really work well!
That's my top ten solutions. In my experience (how sad I have experience with this, lol) it is usually 1. 2. 3. or 5. but never know.
Hope this helps!

It is most probably a roof leak of some sort, or a water pipe leak. And this has developed into a mold or mildew situtiation which emits a smell.
In one case, in my experience, a mushroom poped up near the baseboard of carpeted family room. I pulled up the carpet and it was full of mold. A very, very, minute cold water pipe leak had developed and leaked for a long time right down thru the wall from the bath above and unvisible to all. The carpet surface always appeared dry and nothing ever seemed wrong with the carpet. The room had always had an undesireable odor in it and it was finaly found. Thanks to that mushroom.
Clean up involved total replacement of a section of padding plus a professional steaming out of the carpet.

If the smell is also outside the house then you could have a dead animal under the home and if the smell is just contained inside your home then this could mean you have spoilage in your refridgerator and if the smell is not a human odor such as dirty clothes or human sweat then you perhaps maybe will have something dead or rotting in your attic if you have one, sometimes animals or birds get into the roof and die and that could cause a foul odor, perhaps you keep your trash can in your home and there could be some rotting food or food that has been thrown out into the trash that is causing that odor you smell. Good Luck !

Visit each room one at a time and open the windows and let in some fresh air, then start checking behind all furniture picking up anything that's behind. putting the rubbish behind in bin, put everything away that is out and check inside closet right down at the bottom every corner,
if your in the bed room strip bedding put in the was also curtains vacuum floor and mattress,
in your sitting room vacuum your sofa and carpet dust all surfaces,
In the toilet give it a real good clean some nice bleach should work and scrub the flooring,
in your kitchen check inside your washing machine they smell sometimes, put it on a boil wash empty clean inside fridge, cupboards ,inside bin, and really take care of the floor.
can you get under the floor to see if anything has died.
If all else fails get in touch with the environmental department at your local council they might be able to help,Have you thought of checking out your drainage system it may need to be cleaned .You might need a holiday after this good luck

It could be anything. It could be a dead rodent behind furniture or food scraps in the bin or water stagnating under the fridge or seafood shells in the curtain rods or stinky shoes or an ashtray or something rotting in the vacuum bag. Start eliminating all the hazardous areas. Once it's clean it will smell fresh again.

Take out all the garbage. Put slices of lemons and ice through your garbage disposal to freshen and sharpen the blades. Move appliances in case of a dead rodent. If this doesn't work, the critter may be in the walls. Have it removed by an exterminator. Good luck to you.

Check this in the following order: Frideges and freezers for food spoilage, ceilings vents and walls for mold and mildew, all the laundry cycle it through the wash, check matresses and boxsprings for unknown accidents, and the most gruesome, the possibility of a dead animal

check for bad oranges or potato's. If you have a garbage disposal check it too. Fatty deposits actually rot and stink bad.

Maybe something died, like a rat or mouse. Look behind stuff and at the corners... they might be there..
