My Mac ibook G4, started shutting off before it reached 0%. usually at 80%, but also as low as 30%. The mac SO CALLED Genius told me to replace the battery. He said the problem was caused because my cycle count was too high. So i paid over 100$ for a new battery and it has developed the same problem even with a low cycle count. After a while of using it in the wall outlet it now has and X in the battery display where the % would be showing. What's going on and how can I make my laptop "portable" again?

The "X" means the computer does not recognize the battery as being there. It could be that your replacement battery was bad, it could be the logic board, or it could be the cable that goes from the battery to the logic board.

Most issues of the kind ARE because the battery needs replacing, so I'm not surprised that was your original diagnosis. It may have even been accurate, since he checked your cycle count, but you unfortunately had another issue as well.

Try this article on the apple website.

Over time, the settings in the Power Manager may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. Examples include not turning on, not waking from sleep, not charging the battery, or not seeing the AC Adapter, among others.

Not sure which ibook instruction are for you so you made need to go to the website.

For iBook (16 VRAM) and later models of iBook, there is no physical reset button.

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

if it happen to your new battery...

then it might be the mother board (logic board) problems... bring it to Apple Service Provider or Apple Store, ask for inspection on the board.

hope its still under warranty or if you bought the Extended Warranty, otherwise it is not cheap!
