That's one of the problems encountered by writers, how to start an article. The beginning statement of an article is called the lead. That's the term use in journalism. The lead will help and guide the readers what the article is all about, or at least give the readers a glimpse of what they are about to read. Therefore, make an interesting lead. There are so many examples of lead. It could be a questionnaire lead, a four H, one W lead, quotation lead and so on.

As for me, when I was still a neophyte writer, I would usually read articles and copy the styles other writers have. Now, I already had developed my own style.

I suggest that you read many articles, notice how they start the statement and study them.

I hope you enjoy writing.

Computers and word processing are a godsend for me when it comes to writing. When writing essays for school, business letters or just plain newsy letters I find I ramble on and then edit. Frequently the third or fourth paragraph ends up being more to the topic and I move it to the forefront. In the old days when we wrote by hand that couldn't have happened.

An opening hook is important but I find if I just begin writing it will come to me later.

try starting out with a famous quote related to the subject, or a famous one liner. Just about anything to grab the reader's attention and make them start reading the article you made.

hook and grabber sentences

Hook: attracts your readers attention to your paper
grabber: kind of self explanatory, you have your reader hooked, reel em' in with this sentence
