YES!
What is a Firewall?
A firewall is exactly what it sounds like, it's a wall or a barrier, meant to protect agains fires, but I am not talking about fires here. A properly configured firewall helps keeps online predators from accessing your computer and your personal data.
There are two different types of firewalls: hardware firewalls and software firewalls. Here I will briefly discuss how a software firewall can help protect your computer from malicious software and hackers.
What a firewall does
* A properly configured software firewall helps keeps the 'bad guys' out! How? A good firewall monitors both the inbound and outbound network traffic to/from a computer. Rules, or filters, can be setup to give access to certain applications and processes which legitimately need access to the network. Many of the free firewalls found here come with a setup wizard to help you configure the firewall, so don't be intimidated, every computer connect to the internet should be running a firewall, especially if the computer is connected using a highspeed connection such as T1, cable, DSL etc...

I have used McAffee and also ZoneAlarm both have been great but I use Comodo Free firewall now and like it better then the others. It was tested to be one of the best in the "leak test".

If you have a router remember to turn on the firewall, ive seen idiots who turn of their router firewall totally for the sake of convenience when playing online games.

I had sooooo many issues of Zone Alarm, it did no longer take care of me from a malicious virus which wiped out my hardrive. I replaced it with McAfee and my problems are long gone. i might advise you run to the keep and do a similar.

I'm currently using two programs, from Webroot, for my computer repair business. Here they are:
http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/desktopfirewall/index.html?acode=af2&rc=3202
Webroot Desktop Firewall
http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/spysweeperwithantivirus/index.html?acode=af1&rc=3202
Webroot Spy Sweeper w/Antivirus
They both work flawlessly and I recomment them to all of my clients. They both have a VERY small "footprint" and are very user friendly.
