I say Manchester United is the United. When you mean to say Manchester United, all you need to say is United and people will understand you mean Manchester United. Only when you mean NewCastle United or Sheffield United or other United you need to explicitly say the city name.

So I say Manchester United is the United, how say you?

i get your point, but i'll stick with these:

man u
man utd
manchester united
mu

it is more precise and clearer that way... it takes away doubts as to who you are specifically referring to, ie UNITED is great is ambiguous as the toon army and the blades can claim to be great as well.

man utd IS great settles it.

i only ever say united, and always people know i'm referring to man u. As for what someone above said while man u may not be in the city of manchester it is in the borough of manchester. Also newton heath was founded in 1878, (became united in 1892) while city was founded in 1880!
