I always apply two standards depending upon the circumstances. These are, (1) desired outcome, and; (2) principle.
For simple matters where I desire a particular outcome, like getting my students to turn in homework, I do a cost-benefit analysis. For example, I could probably get a 100% return rate on homework if I called every student's parents every night. But that would cost me way too much time. So, in this case, I sometimes "let it go."
However, when a principle is involved, I am more likely to stand my ground. Like, keeping promises, for example, if a contractor promised in writing that his work would be completed in a workmanship manner, but then the job was done poorly, I would be on him constantly until he returned to complete the work correctly.
So, just ask yourself if you are only trying to get something your way when it is actually relatively minor, or if a higher principle is involved. If its a principle matter, than fight.
Good Luck!

You have to decide when it's something worth fighting for, or if it's more trouble than it's worth. Use your good judgement. If it's important, then fight, if it seems trivial, don't bother.

You have to decide if it is worth fighting for or not. Pick and choose your battles. If it's not worth it, let it go.

you'll just know ,a gut feeling. If it is important to you ,you will tend to stand up for it....but if it is not ,that gut feeling won't be there...at least that is how i feel about it..
though i won't argue a issue unless I am 99.9 percent sure i know what i am talking about....
