I have a 90 S10 2.8 V-6 5 speed trans would it be cheaper to take it to a tranny shop to be rebuilt or just do it myself?

Maybe I am just bitter, but i can't recommend taking any vehicle you care about to a shop unless you have reason to really trust them. the risk of them screwing up the job and refusing to take responsibility for it is just too great. if you do take your vehicle into a shop, you need to prepare from day 1 to sue them in small claims... hopefully you will never have to, but crooked mechanics are just too common.

If you have the time, get a shop manual and find a friend who has done it before to help you. Otherwise try putting an ad up on craigslist, you'll surely be able to find someone who can help you out in case you are having trouble.

Manual Trans? well it is still BIG and long work to do by yourself, you will need another person to help...

Having it done is pretty expensive! approx $350.00, sometimes more and if you shop around, a lil less.

You will save alot by doing it yourself though. You say rebuild, i think you can simply replace whats needed.

Call a few shops and note prices on having it done,... and then call a few auto part stores and notes the parts cost, do your math and see whats best for you!

Best wishes!

depends on if you know how to do it.of course its cheaper to do it yourself but if you srew it up then it might end up in the shop after all or you might have to buy some parts twice. the cheapest way to go is to buy 1 from the salvage yards. check out car-part.com they are a nationwide database they will have some
