just wondering if anyone has had problems with the elctric windows and sunroof etc, in that the buttons sometimes work and sometimes fail...is it just the contacts or do the buttons wear out after 20 years? any link to new elctrics woul be great

The electric sunroof has no relay,the problem may be caused by the button or its motor.The electric motor has a contact inside that works as a protection ( in case you close it, reaches the end and you keep the button pushed, that contact brakes the circuit, protecting the motor from overheating). That contact may be also the cause of your trouble. To fix this, I bypassed it (you have to get the motor out, which is located on the left side, in the trunk) and all I have to do is release the button when the roof is fully opened (or closed).As for the power windows, besides the buttons, the guilty one may be a switch, located near the one that switches the inside light on and off when you open the door.When the doors are closed, you have to turn the key in the ignition to be able to move the windows.But when you open the door, the windows can be lifted even if the key is removed from the ignition and resting in your own pocket.In the fuse compartment, you will find the fuses for the power windows and also a little CUBIC shiny relay (not the ones with black plastic cover).Check them.And make sure that the inside buttons are working properly.You may use the back door ones, they are less used.

My wife drives an 84' 190E and it had a problem with the bank of switches, the ones that turn on AC, heater, etc. My trusted mechanic said that the switches simply "wear out" with time. So, I let him replace the whole bank of switches and everything is fine. I think it was a $120 job (parts and labor.)
Also there's a problem with the interior light switch. I can feel it "sliding" and not clicking. Feels like the metal contacts are worn out. Well, it's a 23 year old car, so it's normal to replace small parts. Otherwise this car is great! It runs fine and has no other problems.

This is a common problem that I have fixed previously. It is most likely the button/switch that is at fault. Remove the switch from the car...and then it can be pulled to pieces.
Once in pieces you will see the copper contacts...it is likely these are very dirty and this is causing your problem.
Clean the contacts with an electrical contact cleaner...can purchase this in spray can at a shop. Then reassemble switch and all will be well.
Dont be tempted to clean up the contacts with sandpaper or anything abraisive...the contact have a coating on them to prevent corrosion. This will be removed if you use abraisives.
This saves you having to go out and buy new switches for the sake of a bit of dirt.
