It depends on the context. If you're talking about rainbow: a rainbow is a full range of colours making up light. If you have another purpose for spectrum it is best to use a word like gamut or range: these words inply from one end of the scale to the other.

plethora, not commonly used... a friend of mine uses it yearly on his flyers for the annual Michigan vs.Ohio State football game...advertises the food to be served along with a couple kegs and the "plethora" of different beers from weak and lite to hard and dark..plethora meaning wide variety
