Space station Mir was well beyond its operational lifespan. With the construction of the ISS to begin shortly, Mir posed a navigational threat to orbital spacecraft. Since its orbit was no longer stable, Technicians worked out the best path to bring it down safely. Once a few smaller modules were undocked and returned to earth with the really dangerous stuff safely aboard, the command was given to fire the thrusters and put the station in its final retrograde orbit . This brought Mir safely back to earth where those bits which did not burn up during re entry crashed harmlessly into the Pacific ocean.
There. I've answered your homework question for you. Now, couch up those ten points ! lol

While Russia was optimistic about the future of Mir.commitments to the International Space Station project meant that there was no funding to support the aging station. Early proposals by Russia to use Mir as the core of the ISS were firmly rejected by NASA, and when the first ISS components were launched NASA insisted upon an orbit which effectively prevented transfer between the two stations

They didn't have to make it fall out of orbit, they just had to stop working hard to keep it in orbit...It was old and broken down and dangerous, there had been numerous fires on board, a collision with a shuttle, and from what I've read the whole thing was being held together with duct tape and bailing wire. Plus the ISS was under construction, so the space station just wasn't needed anymore.
