Saleem, you have to ask "Trust the UN to do what?"
Can you trust anybody? Not according to the Bible, except God. This is in the absolute sense of trust.
But you can trust one person with money, for example, and another in sexual faithfulness. You can trust some people to tell the truth on certain issues, but not on others, and other people to tell the truth on different issues or not at all.
So it all depends on what you want to trust the UN with.
The problem with the UN is that it's entirely dependent on the will and co-operation of its member states, especially the five permanent members of the Security Council: USA, Russia, China, UK and France.
And it gets the blame by ignorant people, such as some of the correspondents above, when one or another country or group of countries proposes or vetoes something that another country doesn't like.
Then there are the (mostly American) conspiracy theorists who claim that it's the centre of the New World Order leading to the antiChrist (strange, since it has always been American political and business leaders who have advocated a New World Order).
Powerless countries see it as a tool of the powerful countries, while the US perversely sees it as a corrupt conspiracy against the US. Odd again, since the headquarters was always in New York at American insistence.
Without the UN there would be much more risk of global conflict and many helpful programmes, in aid, agriculture, the environment, education, health, peacekeeping, assisting refugees and culture would not exist.
How can you expect an organisation to do more than its members will let it?
As for the USA, and I say this to the majority on this site who are American, it has boxed itself into a corner by its policies so that most countries disagree with it on most things. Thus the American reaction is that everybody is wrong about everything all the time except them; therefore they must all be in a conspiracy against the US and the UN is a convenient scapegoat to take the blame.

Anyone that does is too much of an idealist with thoughts of living in an idealist world. There are too many countries with their own agendas now to really be rational or partial to vote as a united group. I don't trust the UN, and I don't trust "united" nations because they become alliances with only a few issues in mind, including military situations.

No not at all. The United Nations is an organization with an ulterior motive.

Do I currently believe in it's capability to achieve it's purpose, No.
I do however believe It may very well be the only thing to stop the world from entering into a nuclear war. With the right leadership, the U.N has the power to do so much for this world.
So I guess, No I don't trust the U.N
But Yes, I have faith in the U.N

Would you "trust" someone who does very little aside from talk?
The UN is a forum for talk...little else. what is to be trusted or not trusted about a toothless old dog...sure...if it's mean and nasty it will gum you with it's mouth, but really...the UN has a great purpose, and the endless prattle does more good than harm.

The veto should be taken away. One of biggest abusers of the veto is "the good old USA" and when the veto is used on them hey just piss off and do what they want. In order for the UN to work all countries must be honest and work within the rules as they stand. We don't need vigilante, rogue nations going out and policing the world as they see fit.

Trust the UN. Get real? The UN only hires people who hate the USA and are determined to destroy it!
Why would any American trust the UN?

The UN should be relocated to Darfur where they might see that a little genocide is taking place!! They seem to like genocide because they have never intervened any time when it comes up in Africa..Why doesn't any of our so-called black leaders make that an issue!! I am tired of sending any of my earned tax money to such a corrupt Org. Get out of the Un now
