I had laser hair removal on the back of my neck and my wife had it done on her UA and bikini area. Both of us had great results and the hair has not returned.
The treatment itself hurt a bit and the pain is dependent on the area you are getting treated and how dense and thick the hair is in that area. Pain became less and less for subsequent treatments.
If you get it done, make sure to go to a qualified provider with good equipment. I am familiar with many stories where results were not good because the equipment was substandard or the provider didn't know what they were doing.
The attached sites provide more information on equipment and offers provider options. The second site offers you survey scores of providers based on previous customers.

Yes, I did laser on my armpits, legs and bikini line. it is not very painful (except in the bikini area) but it takes A LOT of treatments to get rid of the hair. I have done about 15 treatments on my armpits and they still sprout hair every once in a while. Anyone I speak to who has done laser says it takes tons and tons of treatments (more than the 6-8 that most laser places say will do the trick) and that the hair still is not 100% gone but will sprout in every once in a while. So, yes, overall lasering is great because it drastically reduces hair growth but it is very expensive and you will still need to have the ole razor on standby to get those random hairs that pop up.

i'm actually in the process of it. i just had my 5th treatment (out of a minimum of 6) last week on my legs, and i must say, that physically it is a lot easier than shaving or waxing, but financially it hurts lol. i have a VERY VERY VERY low tolerance for pain so waxing almost killed me. shaving takes too long for me and i'm always nicking and cutting myself in the shower, so laser is the best method, i believe. plus, the results are permanent. so i can wear shorts and skirts and bathing suits this summer (los angeles will be having a record summer so good thing i'm ready!) without having hairy legs as an excuse lol!

Laser hair removal is “permanent” hair removal method but is expensive and you have to find a trained professional, otherwise your skin could be damaged.

It is a little bit painful, but the pain level is sustainable (like when you get small burns from frying something) and it lasts only a second (or shorter), but it sure is worthwhile.
