You probably won't find research material on this. But, it depends upon what you mean by "small." For IT companies of say less than 20 people, many don't provide insurance at all. For companies that do provide insurance, large companies usually do within 30 days. Small companies usually do in 90 days. In the US, it's not required for an employer to provide health insurance to employees.
