The heat has to be rejected from the room to the outside.
You can purchase an air conditioner that is special in that it will operate in a single room with hose attachments to reject the heat elsewhere.
Or central air, which is a split system as one write indicates.

Some manufactures make an portable air conditioner which exhausts using a 4" hole in the wall (similar to a clothes dryer exhaust). These units are usually available at home centers at the right time of year. Because these are "specialty items" they typically cost more than a traditional window unit.

it needs to vent to the outside. there is also a runoff of water from the back to consider. i would invest in a really good fan
