I don't think you can find better reason to call it PERSIAN GULF
http://unstats.un.org/unsd/geoinfo/gegn23wp61.pdf
Considering the historical background of the name Persian Gulf, Sir Arnold Wilson mentions in a book, published in 1928 that:
"No water channel has been so significant as PERSIAN GULF to the geologists, archaeologists, geographers, merchants, politicians, excursionists, and scholars whether in past or in present. This water channel which separates the Iran Plateau from the Arabia Plate, has enjoyed an Iranian Identity since at least 2200 years ago.

The person who was talking about Arabian Sea completely misunderstood . I live in the Arabian Gulf. I'm no Arab, though. I'm sure I know better than him. Let me tell you, Arabian Sea is the Sea south-east of Arabiaand it reaches countries like Pakistan, India and the Maldives also. It goes through a small opening in the land and occupies a Gulf near Qatar known as Arabian Gulf today and a few years back it was called the Persian Gulf. However, both the names can be used. There is a difference between a sea and a Gulf. A gulf is an inlet of the water of the sea into a very thin or small area.

The historic name is the Persian Gulf.
But during the Iran hostage crisis in 1979-81, when the US began its present disastrous mid-east policy, the name was changed in the US for political reasons to the Arabian Gulf. Like French fries later became Freedom fries. Childish or what?
Now the Arabs as well as the Iranians are the enemy, it's usually just called The Gulf.
But the use of the word Persia instead of Iran and the Persian language instead of Farsi has now been adopted in the West to mean "good" things associated with Iran, such as Iranian refugees opposed to the current regime.
So the Persian Gulf is making a comeback.

Above me got it wrong. The "Persian Gulf" is an arm of the "Arabian Sea" (not gulf). There's a map at this link: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/islands_oceans_poles/indianoceanarea.jpg
As you can see, the Arabian Sea is pretty much all of the water between Africa and India, while the Persian Gulf is only that bay of water directly between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
*heavy sigh* Below me got it wrong too. Why such geographically ignorant people bother to answer questions is beyond me.
