Was that Ian Holm's character? I remember if they show him dying, but there is a conversation between him and Dennis Quaid where they say that the Holm (and the other people at his station/outpost) won't survive. Quaid says something like "it's time to get you out of there" and Holm replies "that time has come and gone".

The cabin was freezing over they don't show him dying, but unless i missed some dramatic scene of him being rescued i am pretty sure he died.
