If you "mess up really bad" in JC, it's highly unlikely that a UC will accept you as a transfer student.

You should look into TAG (transfer admission guarantee) program. You need a 2.8 GPA in 60 units of GE classes to gain admission to a UC school. TAG is the best way to go since you can keep taking classes until you reach the 2.8 mark. Of course, this is provided that you can get A's and B's in your classes.

You should work on raising your GPA by retaking classes that you received a grade of D or F. Also after you have completed the 60 units of classes and your GPA is still a little short, you can take classes that you know you will do well, as long as they are transferable.

How bad are we talking about? UC's tag system from jc's are guranteed (well, pretty much) provided you meet the minimum requirements of credits and GPA.
