Just be frank to these people Sarah. I told my chinese friends not to bother inviting me over for weddings which serves sharks fin. I understand their tradition of having the soup as it signify their status. They understand my view of protecting the sharks. We are still the best of friends until today, nothing has changed because of our different view on sharks fin.

One or two people who refuse to eat shark fin soup is not going to stop the practice. Hundreds of thousands of people eat the stuff throughout South East Asia. The cuisine in the South East Asian region is fantastic, and Malaysia is no exception. Having lived in the area for in excess of 10 years throughout my career I would take a holiday there as soon as I could just for the food. As for bird nest soup, I have been the Niah Caves in Sarawak where many of the nests are collected, it is real (just to answer a comment from one of the previous answers).

I will stop eating shark fins the day more sharks are killed compared to human being killed in this world. Everyday more human beings are killed for silly reasons and the name of religions so why bother about not eating shark fins.
I will ask for 2 bowls.

not something I'd order (because I know about the stories behind like cut-and-release or even lead enriched to make them heavyer and get more profit etc) but if offered what is the point of refusing. I never refuse food, even if I don't know what it is, and eat it (maybe only once if I don't like it) but I have no special dietary requirements whatsoever so it is a bit easier for me to accept just about anything.

But protecting the species would be more useful for our oceans already terribly stressed. If suddenly nobody buys sharkfin any more, then the killing will stop, too...

If its already served on our table, what's the point refusing to it? I don't see any reason why. However, if I had a choice of ordering it in the first place, I would prefer not since I do not believe that eating sharksfin is a necessity. There are a lot of other alternatives like 'crab-soup' these days.

When we talk about protecting these creatures, the best way is to go out against the hunters or those who are in the industry. That is the root of the problem, not eating by itself. I was told too, that some of the sharksfin being sold are not commercially hunted but in fact, comes along with the whole body of the shark (which means, they are not those 'cut and release' sharks). Could this be true?

At present, I live in a port city and I see a lot of sharks are sold in the market (some are without their fins, so this rumour can be true).

By the way, Sarah, yes I was a monk and maybe I might just go back into monkhood again within a few year's time. You might want to check out more info/photos: www.friendster.com/3355635

I might stop posting questions on the Malaysia site of Yahoo Answers when I think its time. I'm getting fed up of the same answers and worse, arrogance and sheer stupidity from some people. Not that I hate Malaysia whatsoever, its a fact that we can't please everybody and that's the truth. I didn't come on to Yahoo Answers to fight with anyone. Its not what I want to see on Answers. I already had enough from reading Asnwers in the R&S section.

I wouldn't eat it and I'd tell my host that I'm a vegetarian, which I am.

I'm actually interested in protecting all creatures.
