You know what. TOO MANY!!! I am so sick of having to watch my husband kill himself at work and pay taxes just so these women can get their hair and nails done. I see this all the time and they are not disabled or senior citizens and we still have to pay them because they decide to sleep around and have 10 kids from 10 different men. It is not like they use the money on those poor children but on and for themselves. Now I know not all do, I am just talking about the ones that do. You know the one's who are more than likely going to give me a thumbs down.

Thank you.

well... this is a very complicated answer to find... I've searched for a while...

the trick is... IT'S NOT CALLED JUST WELFARE...

and it really depends on how you define "WELFARE"...

here... I'll make it really simple... from what I can tell... and I don't know a lot about this granted... this is the closest answer to what most consider welfare... it's a program called TANF...

"There were 2,032,157 families receiving TANF cash benefits in June 2003, the most recent month for which data are available."...

a little over 2 million families...receiving some assistance..I would estimate that's probably around 6 to 10 million people total in those families... probably most of them all being children... since most are probably one parent households.. which would be about 2 to 3 percent of the population of the U.S. (this is totally my uneducated estimate though on the 6 to 10 million numbers... just figuring between 3 and 5 members per family on average)

got the number on the first site... more general info on the second site...

http://www.acf.hhs.gov/news/facts/tanf.html

http://www.acf.hhs.gov/opa/fact_sheets/tanf_factsheet.html

and a more general overview:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporary_Assistance_for_Needy_Families

and this doesn't include food stamps I don't think, or disability or social security or medicaid or medicare... or any other program...

and for a WAY more general overview of all federal assistance you can check this out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_assistance_in_the_United_States

of course as everyone else has mentioned... there are many programs that seem to cater to the elderly and disabled more...

oh... and if I'm wrong... feel free to correct me someone...

most people who are senior citizens receive a social security check based on the income they earned and paid into the fund while while working.

some who never worked, or worked very little
and are single senior citizens or disabled receive supplemental insurance or ssi
(This category includes some refugees or recent immigrants who never worked in the US. They receive cash as well as food stamps)

Finally, there are families (parents with children)who don't earn enough to survive and they are sometimes given aid to sustain a survival existence
Sometimes the parents don't work because they are ill or they do not have child care. Some times the parents do work but earn so little they need assistance from the government.

Can't answer how many are on the public dole, but I do know
no one is getting rich or living luxuriously on welfare

disabled ppl dont get welfare they get disability and most senoir citizens get social security, unless they didnt work when they were younger, so most ppl who recieve welfare are fully capable of working

there is no way to answer that question. the disabled and senior citizens have privacy rights on their side. it is none of your business whom is on welfare just because the person needs to eat daily.
