Check the system requirements by going the manufacturers site and reading up on your laptops model number before installing Win 98 se.

You should be able to install Windows 98se from the CD.

Once installed, you may find that some of the hardware may need drivers.

You may be able to download the drivers you need.

Please note that if your laptop was originally shipped with XP, there is a chance that Win98se drivers might not be available for all the hardware.

You can sometimes get away with generic or chipset drivers if you can't find the exact driver required.

The BIOS is in EEPROM, so it should still be in there.
Most machines will load 98se, a few models might need a disk partition setup CD or Floppy disk to be run first.
After 98se is loaded, you may need to get some drivers. You might need to use a friend's computer to get to the Internet until you have drivers for the NIC or modem sub-units loaded.

do a dual boot with one of the free operating systems.

Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

you can install 98SE on it just fine, but you will need to install addtional drivers for 3rd party peripherals, since 98SE doesnt have support for MP3 players and alot of other external drives and whatnot.
