This car is obviously fuel injected.By 'pumping the gas' you are actually only opening and closing the throttle plate, and not pumping any gas at all.But there is a 'TPS = Throttle Position Sensor' attached to the lever of the throttle plate. You also have an IAC Idle Air Control Sensor.Perhaps you have carbon buildup on the plate, and by actuating the accelerator pedal, you are opening and closing the throttle plate allowing for more air to get into the system. The IAC Sensr allows for a small amount of air to get in.If carbon is built up on the throttle plate, it could be blocking that air inlet.Try using a carburetor cleaner in spray can form and clean the throttle plate.A throttle plate is the same functionary part on both carburetor and fuel injection.Good Luck

Your fuel pump may be going bad. Not allowing the gas to get to the engine when cranking. One thing to try first is cleaning your carberator. If you have fuel injection the injectors may be getting dirty also. these can be cleaned but be careful when taking them out you don't want to lose or ruin the o-rings or you'll have to replace them. One other option is a dirty fuel filter. sorry it's hard to diagnois the problem with out actually knowing a little more history on your vehicle.

Try pumping the gas pedal 3 times, to the floor, slow, then on the third pump, just go halfway down, and try to start the car with the pedal part way down..You probably need to put your car in low gear, and run it pretty hard, until it is almost ready to shift, but don't shift it, just let up on the pedal. You might have carbon build up, so you should blow it out once in awhile...Good Luck

Whatever actuates your choke sensor is not working; you are acting as the choke to start it.
