The best beach in SD is Windansea Beach in La Jolla. It also has the whitest sand and clearest water out of all the beaches I've been to in San Diego. It's right off La Jolla Blvd. near Nautilus St. It's not very touristy at all like LJ Shores or Pacific/Mission Beaches. It's mostly locals and is very chill. It reminds me of beaches you might see in Hawaii and is definately worth checking out.

Of the ones you list, I'd have to go with La Jolla Shores, but it can get super-crowded. Shell beach is fine, but it's really small, kinda like La Jolla Cove. Try Torrey Pines, parking can be tough but there's plenty of room to spread out and the beach is great.

La Jolla shores is nice, mission beach, pacific beach, not the whitest sand, but nice....busy during spring break, always..The weather should be really fantstic now..There is Torrey pines a little further north that is less crowded..There is a beach called Blacks Beach, where people run around nude..You have to go down from the cliffs to get to that one..Del Mar and Encinitas is nice and less congested...Good luck on beach hunting...

La Jolla is beautiful and the cleanest for swimming but can be crowded. I like going to Coronado because it isn't usually very crowded and if you have kids who like to play in the sand it's great! Mission Beach has a lot of action especially for spring breakers. San Elijo and South Carlsbad are great for a camping experience at the beach.

La Jolla is goregous - my favorite beach will always be Torrey Pines, My Husband proposed there and I loved the clean area, the friendly seals and the park area which gives you a little privacy

la jolla shores is really nice but is really busy. if you can get there early and get parking in the lot it will be nice. if you want a less crowded beach go to one of the state parks. you have to pay for parking but it cuts down on the crowds. torrey pines is close to la jolla shores and there is also silver strand in coronado.
good luck.

Blacks Beach (also known as Torrey Pines State Beach)
warning, the north end is clothing optional.
But it will be the very least crowed.
There really isn't any "White sandy" beaches, we don't have that type of sand here.

I used to live in OB and I just loved it! Great people a nice beach, bonfire pits for your evening enjoyment. Good surfing! They also have some nice shops and who doesn't love Your Mamma's Mug! OB is pretty quiet most the time it is just a bunch of locals, the beach is pretty clean. There is pretty good parking, a big public lot and a lot of side streets to park on. I also love this place at night pretty quiet nice walk. Have good time!
