Every year the Yankee fans, and owner, think the Yankees will win it all. Besides being disappointed in the end if it doesn't happen, the fans really are some of the best in the game. They are usually very optomistic, and know the players well. So my question is looking at the dark side, and wondering what will cause them to lose. Will it be injury, bad performance, better performance by another team, bad managing, bad trades, A-Rod's playoff woes, whatever. I'm just curious if the Bronx faithful will indulge me on this one. And just so you know, I'm an Astros fan so I've got a long list why my team won't. Not that I'm counting them out. I just see Yankee fans everywhere I go.

Because they've not only run their franchise like a rotisserie team, but overstocked it with power hitters.
Perfect example in '04: Sheffield, A-Rod, Matsui, Giambi and Posada. In addition to Jeter and Williams (more complete hitters who don't rely so much on pop), they set franchise records for team homers, but wasted too much money on hitters that would have otherwise been spent on better quality pitching instead of wasting money on malcontents like Kevin Brown.
And how did they do? Despite astronomically increasing their payroll, they ended up with the same number of wins as the 2003 team, which had Roger Clemens, Andy Pettite and David Wells; and did worse in the postseason! Their team ERA was nearly 5.00, 6th in the AL compared to 3rd the year before.
All those power hitters did was strike out more in the postseason compared to the year before. Hence, the batting order couldn't find their rhythm and learn to work together. Everyone kept trying to hit one out instead of worrying more about getting on base.
The only reason they got A-Rod in the first place was to spite Boston. They needed a 3rd baseman and instead got a shortstop to fill their need. The '98 team, considered the franchise's best; consisted of one player who won the batting title and many others whose stats didn't stand out in any way. But the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. The opposite is true now.

Yes the Yankees run their franchise like a business, just like the A's and every other team in MLB. There's a lot of reasons why the Yankees might not win. The age of the starting pitching, the bullpen, a lack of clutch hitting by not only ARod but the rest of the team. The biggest reason why they might not win it is because is hard to win a Championship, the best team doesn't always win. The Yankees do the best job of giving themselves a chance each year.

Because they run their team like a business and not a baseball team. The players look at eachother as coworkers and not as fellow teammates. There's no comraderie at all on the Yankees. It's just a business to them and they're all trying to make money which is the number one thing in New York City. The A's on the other hand, are a real, fun, baseball team. It's fun watching them and forgetting about the whole money aspect of baseball. They went to the ALCS last year with a payroll much lower than that of the NY Yankees. The Yankees only made it to the first round last year. There are so many reasons why the Yankees are not a good team in my opinion.

I'm a Yankee fan but I'll take a shot at this. If the Yanks don't win the Series it will be due to one of these reasons:
1. They don't make the playoffs:
* Starting pitching questions - Wang 19 wins?, Mussina's age?, Pettitte's elbow?, Pavano?, Igawa?
* Failure to land Clemens or another big starter like Oswalt, Willis, etc
* Key injuries
2. They make the playoffs but:
* Overworked bullpen breaks down
* Failure to hit in clutch
* They run into another team like the '06 Tigers
That being said, I think they will make the playoffs and they are one of a handful of teams who have a chance to win it all.

Because they are'nt good enough.Pitching is suspect , not enough team speed and the rest of the division is improved, Toronto is going to be tough and the Sox are still in there. Tigers , White Sox are all contenders along with the Yankees but it's a long season and pitching is the key
National League has a lot of last years playoff teams that have improved. Go Cardinals lets make it 2 in a row

Lack of pitching. Their bullpen is un-proven and in constant flux outside of Rivera, and their rotation leaves much to be desired.
It's like anything else..
The Yankees win the World Series IF: Mike Mussina repeats 2006 and not 2005, if Andy Pettitte can successfully transition back to the AL East and keep his ERA below 5.00, If Chien-Ming Wang's 19 wins with only 76 K's werent a fluke, if Carl Pavano has anything left, and if Kei Igawa is more Nomo than he is Irabu.
The Yankees will NOT win the World Series because: Mussina pitched over his head last year, Andy Pettitte (although a gamer) will get hit in the AL East, With such low K rates there is very little sabermetrical chance of Wang repeating his 2006 campaign, Pavano is a head-case and likely will not contribute much, and Igawa (though good in Japan) only throws 85-88 with mediocre complimentary pitches.

Well I can't disagree with you more. Each year every team starts out in 1st place and then the games begin. What other team can say that for the past 9 years in a row they have won their division. What other team has been in the playoffs for the past 13 years. The mere fact that they get into the postseason always opens the oppotunity to win it all. I say they win it all this year but being a Yankee fan I say that every year.

Pitching is very bad. Pettite will not adjust back to the AL, Pavano will get hurt, Igawa will suck, Mussina will be the only good starter. The offense is great but the Yankees will not be able to overcome the pitching in the playoffs.

1. They don't have a stopper in their rotation - when they won the world series, Pettitte was dominant and could easily change the momentum of the series with one key victory
2. Their players aren't as clutch as they used to be - other than Jeter and Mo - their big time players like Giambi, A-rod, and Matsui don't seem to get the job done in the playoffs when they are counted on... to be honest even Jeter doesn't seem to be his old self come playoff time anymore

Because The Tigers will.
Ha Ha. I don't know who will win the world series this year.
It's way too early to tell.
But I say this:
The Yankees always have a better chance than any other team because they are The Yankees.
