I'm not entirely familiar with this, however a friend of my mom's had to have it done and I can't say it was a lot of fun..she said it was pretty painful afterward. It was weird because she was in her 60's and had already had menopause, and she basically was bleeding for no reason so the Drs. determined she had some problem and that would fix it. That was like a year or two ago...and she's fine now.

Anyhow, here's a site that might help you...I think this is what you are talking about: http://www.healthopedia.com/dilatation-and-curettage/

You said you weren't sure about the information your Dr. was giving you, they were acting funny because of your insurance? If you even have a small doubt in the care you are receiving, I would strongly advise (if you can) to seek another Dr.'s opinion on this. If it is really something that will require surgery, you really should get a second opinion to make sure that's the right thing to do. Good luck!

I don't know if there is a Medical School close to where you live or not but if there is I would recommend going there for help.

The procedure your dr wanted to do where they scrape sounds like a D&C (dilitation and curettage). The dilitation part is to open up the cervix so that they can see in to the uterus and the curettage is for the scraping.

I would recommend asking the dr about doing a hysteroscopy as well so that they can get a good look at the inside of the uterus to see if something like a polyp (no, polyps are not always cancerous, I know because I had one removed from the top of my cervix in 1999) could be causing this bleeding episode.

D&C like hysteroscopy (where they send a special camera up your vagina to look around your uterus) is also used for diagnostic (for finding out what is wrong) purposes. I had this done in 1999.
