I have to go with the Athlon on this one.

But it really depends on what you are using it for. Here is a link to a site that allows you to compare processors on many different types of programs.

Athlon 64 3200+ am2 single core
Clawhammer : 2 GHz
Newcastle : 2.2 GHz
Winchester : 2 GHz
Orleans : 2 GHz

I don't know exactly which one of them are AM2 socket.

Pentium D 820 : 2.8 GHz dual core.

According the benchmark results, Pentium D 820 perform a faster calculations in every test. So, Pentium D 820 are better than Athlon 64 3200+.
