i always saw people commenting other people's photos and they wrote, "so vain", "you're vain" etc etc.
i wonder, what is actually vain? because when i searched in a dictionary, it means selfish or unsuccessful.

You are almost right. Vain means to be excessively proud of, or concerned about, one's own appearance, qualities, achievements, etc. An example of use: She is very vain.
It can also mean unsuccessful: failing to have, or unlikely to have, the intended or desired result. For example - He tried in vain to rescue the cat from the tree.
