Although I personally believe that a daily 2 hour homework is a bit too harsh on secondary students, lets see how I can help you, coz you are for the motion I believe.

First of all, think from a parents' perspective. It will be great to have your child working for something constructive for atleast two hours in a day. Teenage is a tender age where destructive tendencies usually rule the mind. What better way to mold the mind than to enforce it on something that will be fruitfull for not just the individual involved but also for the whole society in the longer run.

Secondly, there comes the issue of implementing this scheme. If this scheme is implemented intelligently by the instructors then it will be intellectually rewarding as well as refreshing for the students as well. Interesting topics should be chosen for homeworks. The homework should not be the same for the whole class, but customized according to each child's needs, interests, and capabilities. This way, students will begin to enjoy doing the work and it will cease to be a problem anymore.

It is more important the quality of the homework rather than the quantity. If there is too much homework, you will have very little time to memorize anything. I think Einstein said something to the effect that "Don't waste your brain by memorizing everything. If you do that, you will have no space to think. Books have all the information you need, so save your brain-space for thinking". I am sure I quoted that very poorly but I think that was the essence of it.

For myself I like larger projects. For instance in my sophomore year of high school I did a project on the Punic Wars and now I still have a fairly good memory of it because I had time to concentrate on it. But in my Algebra class, where we did new types of problems and formulas every day, it took two hours just to learn the first days formula and then the next day would be a completely different formula and in the end I now forgot how to do both of them.

If the class is very specific, like "Western European history" then two hours a day might not be bad because you could use that time to learn a lot....... But if you spend two hours on European history, then two hours on Asian history, then two hours on Russian dance styles, you will end up forgetting most of it.

there is some research that suggests homework at the secondary level is beneficial to the students, so long as the students have the resources to complete their HW e.g., access to help if needed. Homework should be practice-there needs to be a basic level of understanding in order for the students to gain from completing homework assignments. There needs to be a purpose for every assignment and the students should be aware of the purpose. Homework grading should be explained beforehand and follow-up on the teachers part should be done for assignments. (If it is turned in incorrect, a poor grade is given and the student is done with it what's the point!?)
When these standards are followed homework is beneficial at the secondary level... google it you should find plenty of info. :) good luck

Sorry, I can only find info that supports the negative. 2 hours is too much unless you are 12th grade, the general theory is grade X 10 mins, eg, Grade 1 10 mins, grade 8 80 mins (1hr 20), grade 12 120 mins (2 hour), anything more implies teacher using homework to teach, not review - what are they being paid for if they are not teaching this in class?

No, it is not essential.
I spent, maybe, 40 minutes a day for my homework and I turned up just fine: I got my MA degree some time ago.
Take my advice: don't work hard, work smart.

So, you can say that it is necessary as it helps the students to revise what they have learned in school and also helps them to know weather or not they have understood the lessons well.
