It all depends on the purpose of the conversation, the setting, the relationship with the other or others involved in the conversation.

If the purpose is to learn more about a new person, for example, the relationship between the two people would be undefined (though they may have an idea as to if this is just passing time with a stranger or something that may lead to a more stable, long term relationship -- be it a friendship, romance, acquaintance, etc. ). This type of conversation focuses on information to get to know about the person or to share ideas.

Another example might be a discussion with someone you know well, or have a lose relationship with and you meet for a purpose, suppose a group or club with a specified interest. In this case you will be trying to share new information, persuade others to share your views or debate between differing values.

For people within an established relationship (again, this doesn't just pertain to romantic involvement) people talk about issues of interest, news to keep the other(s) updated, concerns, joys, ideas, etc.

So, in a nutshell, what is talked about has a great deal to do with why people are conversing in the first place.

That depends upon who the conversation is between. Friends and family talk about more personal things, acquaintances talk about common interests, and strangers talk to figure out if there is any chance of a further association. Colleagues at work gossip about the workplace, and curse their jobs/bosses/subordinates. Just some of the common conversation hooks I have noticed over the years.

Well small-talk works wonders...stay away from loaded questions (like opinionated ones, politics, or even your views, sometimes the economy leads to politics so be wary.)

Just, go where the conversation takes you, for the most part. If a subject is uncomfortable try to casually change it, if this doesn't work be direct but not demanding or blunt.

Hope this helps.

The weather, sports, current events, things like that. Unless you know the person you are talking to, then the things you converse about tend to be more personal

Well I guess it depends on the conversation. My conversations with friends usually focus on what movie/bar/restaurant we are going to. Other than that we just discuss normal everyday topics.

If you are talking about "mature" conversations, then I guess I would be talking about what I liked and what I was into.

If it is a conversation with myself I usually just find myself laughing. I love to crack myself up.
