the difference is that erosion is the term used to call rocks that are weathered and transported to a new location away form the parent rock (the rock that it was weathered from)

Otherwise they are the same thing.

weathering is the process of decaying a rock through mechanical (tree roots breaking up the rock, a geologist breaking the rock w/ a hammer then dropping it on the ground again, ice wedging, etc.) or chemical means (water (rain), acid, some plant roots chemically react to the rocks (especially limestone), etc.)
Erosion is the physical removal of a rock. A good example is that of the geologist breaking the rock with a hammer then taking that sample back to his/her lab to study it.

PS these processes accrue on the earth's surface (just to let you know)

eErode is to wear away gradually-i.e. water rushing over stones for ages; weathering is worn or damaged by weather. The dictionary does not have the word weathering but does have weather-beaten. It would seem that eroding takes a long period of time. Weather damage would not, especially if constant sun beating down on an object winds banging something around constantly or over a shorter period of time than erosion of something would take.

Before we got the no maintanance patio decking, we went through 3 patios with the wood flooring with in a short number of years due to being weather beaten. So much so we got fed up with having new ones built and went with the new stuff and our railings are made of a type of pvc pipings so all in all our patio equivelant to 2 15' by 15' wrap arounds will out last us and never need replacing.

Both can be the result of exposure to the elements over time, but weathering is usually an aesthetic term to describe something "aging" due to exposure to the weather - like a fence weathering and changing color due to exposure to the sun. Erosion is the physical decay of material due to wind and water over time - like the erosion of the Sphinx from exposure to wind, sun and sand over the centuries. I hope this helps.

there is much written on both topics.
The best way to keep them seperate is to remember that weathering generally does not involve the transporting of said item being effected to somewhere else.
Erosion does.
