I am going through exactly the same thing right now! I went for years without even one friend. I spent money on stereos, CDs, and DVDs to keep myself from going insane and into despair. I finally made a friend over the summer, and we discussed anything and everything. I mean, we agreed on almost every issue. Through him, I met many more people who I got to know, and my life was thrust into an era I had never been through before.
A few weeks ago he got mad at me for something. Near the end of the friendship I realized that his pride was like a long cape, easy to step on. I tried to avoid doing that. I even endured a few awkward moments when he demanded that I acknowledge him as "superior." Finally, I wasn't able to keep up with his demanding pride, and he got angry and cut off all contact with me suddenly.
As if that weren't enough, he turned every person who I met through him, against me completely. Since they knew him first, they took his side arbitrarily. I feel like a rock star that has suddenly lost fame. One moment I never had time to even clean my room because I was out with the group all the time. Now, I can't find anything to do but fall asleep on the floor just to get through the day. And the worst part?
There was a girl in the group. I've never been given even the time of day by any girl, but this girl was so sweet. I think I fell in love with her, but regardless, as soon my "friend" turned on me, she seems to have taken his side. I felt invincible when around this girl. My mom abused the crap out of me as a child, but every time I was around this girl, things seemed better. Now, even she is gone, and when I think about it, all she hears now is probably the negative things from my former "friend," without me there to plead my case.
I hope things go well for you. I haven't much hope left in my life. I don't think I will be around here much longer. More importantly, I HOPE I won't be around here much longer.

Have you tried talking to him or one of them? You should call one of them aside and ask then whats the motive behind the change. Friends who turn usually have jealousy toward the person they are hurting. You should get new friends and this will help you get them off your mind easier. When you surround yourself with positive people you will realise that the old friends you have werent real friends.

first off be sure not to play his game, always tell the truth and dont try to turn people against one another. the end result is always ugly.
all you can do is plead your case. if they dont buy then they arent your friends. thats where you draw the line.
what can this guy possibly have said to make everyone hate you? that you sell crack? you ate a family of four? find out what it is and disprove it. if you can it makes the source of the rumor look really bad and unreliable.

Yeah that has happened to me too, just not a best friend, but just a friend. Anyway, you guys need to seriously discuss together about your problems and settle things straight. See why your best friend is talking behind your back and going against you. He is definately not a true friend, so I would suggest you to move on and find new friends who are better. Friends come and go...
