Punk rock is a branch of rock. Punk is kind of a rebellious form of rock that distance themselves from corporations and politicians. They are usually don't care much about opinion and some don't even like money. I have a friend who is the biggest punk I've met. He likes Black Flag, Anti-Flag, the Dead Kennedy's and he is always talking about how corrupt the world is. I'm sure you get the idea from here.
Another thing, punk is not really mainstream. I'm not talking about Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte, like the REAL punk bands are mostly underground. Rock in general is very mainstream.

Punk has a fast a beat whereas the drums can overpower the rest of the instruments. In Rock you can heard the guitar more than anything.
