lmcrislip- Sasha is my little sister's name and so unusual that it is interesting that you choose that name for a nick name
Dawn is my sister's middle name and wea for a nick name is something that I have thought about.
Many people say how could I name my kid that, well I love my heritage, that is why and I know that she might get picked on in school, that is one of the reason's for a nick name

Needless to say - I LOVE the middle name =)

I like the name. Sacajawea is a historical figure that we natives should be very proud of.

If you do a nickname, I like "Wea" like how my nephew used to pronouce my name =)

PS: Check out the nickname suggetion above. Do you know that guy? ... Dude, Sasha is her sister's name!!!

I think it's a nice name. If you like it, why does it matter what anyone else thinks?

Kids are cruel and will bully each other even with a "normal" name. So I honestly wouldn't worry about it. I don't know of any nicknames, sorry. But I have had relatives who use their middle names as nicknames. Not sure if that idea works for you. Or you could create one that doesn't have anything to do with the first name.

It is a beautiful name choice. The historical significance of the name can be a blessing and a curse for the child though. Since you are Native American your child may find herself the target of cruel verbal attacks when her class learns about the original Sacajawea. A suggestion could be to allow her to be known more by her middle name when she hits grade school. In the end the choice is ultimately yours. You will be the one who can instill the goodness of the name in her no matter what her classmates may invent.

As far as nicknames I think the person a couple of comments up is right. Jo seems about the closest.

I don't like it, sorry. Dawn is pretty but I just don't like Sacajawea. It's one of those names that should stay in the history books IMO.

I looked up American Indian names...how about Aiyana, Aponi(means "butterfly"), Chimalis(bluebird), Dyani(deer), Etania(wealthy), Kaya(my elder sister-little), Nitika(angel of precious stone), Sakari(sweet), Taima(crash of thunder), Tallulah(leaping water), Tehya(precious)

It's pretty, and it would fit with your ethnicity very nicely. As far as nicknames go.. Possibly Aja, Jaws, Cahwe, Aca, Swea, Sweet, Sweets, and there's always Dawn.

I actually was very close friends in college with a girl whose nickname was Jaws.

its unusual but because of the significance, very beautiful. i would make sure that she understands the relevance of her name from the very begining. i would also make sure that she is comfortable with a nickname or other name before she starts school. kids can be very cruel. i think sadie would make a nice nickname.

Not many people on here are going to know the relevance of native American names, there meanings or the importance of them in your culture. Do you not have any relatives or elders that you could consult on this, rather than asking a bunch of people who really can not give you the information that you require.

I would call her Caja, with a soft pronunciation of the J so that it almost rhymes with Asia. I think that has a flowing yet sophisticated sound.
