I've work in substance abuse counseling for a very long time now. Been in recovery for 27 plus years. Just to qualify. I have never met a person who developed problems with Drugs including Alcohol that did not have low self esteem. This problem is symptomatic of a deep rooted psychological problem that begins in the formative years. If you have this problem get in touch with your local AA or NA programs. Karl Jung had theory's on the subject which can be found in a book called "Pass It On" to go further at this time would be pointless. Best to you and yours.

Well that's a good question. I did drugs (mostly weed) for 12 years. I don't really feel lack of respect made me start. But I sure felt that way after I really got into it. For me it was trying to fit in with my (so called ) friends. I have found out true friends will stick by you no matter what. And yes for me it was an escape from my problems ( did not help though ) But it took me years to realize that. I have now been drug free foe 16 years and I don't miss it one bit...

Most people who do drugs will give you a different reason. Lack of self respect may play into it, but I think the number one reason it to get away from the real world.

Perhaps. But I think its mostly peer pressure. Kids like to conform & they like to offer others whatever vice it is they have, e.g., smoking, drugs, alcohol.

I also think another main reason people do drugs or drink is because they are people who don't like to feel bad so they self-medicate. Of course this makes them feel worse. They still have whatever problems they had before plus the additional problem of addiction.

I would agree that one of the problems they might have would stem from a lack of self-confidence but I don't think that alone would cause them to try mind-changing substances.
