The native americans consider a rite of passage.
What did you say to belittle him?

I would never belittle someone who believes that prom night is part of the rite of passage for teens to move into the adult world.

Drinking diet cola may be a ritual, but I don't know of a religious rite associated with it.

Please don't use "rite" when you mean to use "right."
Right = correct ("you are absolutely right"); or a direction ("turn right at the stop sign"); or directly ("right now", "right away"); or something you are entitled to ("I have the right to say what I want").
Rite = a spiritual ritual, often "rite of passage" or "last rites" ("The family performed the burial rites for their deceased father.")
Belittle = to put down.
