Galaxies are collections of tars orbiting a central mass, now believed to be a black hole in all cases. Since at least some of the stars are likely to have orbiting planets, a galaxy can be said to be a system of solar systems.

Accretion occurs when the orbit of some object intersects with the surface of a planet or star. Friction from the star's atmosphere retards speed of the object so that it no longer has escape velocity, and is therefore captured. With earth type (rocky) planets the collision is inelastic due to friction and the two bodies continue through space as one larger body.
