~~ Twin cities are often separated by a river or a border.
Or are just cities that are geographically close to one another.

~~ Perhaps the most famous example of twin cities in the United States is the combination of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, (in Minnesota), on the banks of the Mississippi River.
Other examples are:
* Winston / Salen in North Carolina
* The Dallas / Fort Worth in Texas
* Texarkana, Texas / Texarkana, Arkansas
* Ottawa, Ontario / Gatineau, Quebec in Canada.

~~The border between the United States and Mexico is significant because there is a chain of twin cities:
* Cuidad Juarez on the Mexico side / El Paso, Texas on the U.S. side.
* Nogales, Arizona, United States / Nogales, Sonora, Mexico
* Calexico, California, United States / Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.

~~ One remarkable example of twin cities is:
* Rivera (Uruguay) with Santana do Livramento (Brazil).
With nearly 200,000 inhabitants, this is the only known case of twin cities of this size, belonging to different countries.

~~ I live in a twin city, on a state borderline:
* Tweed Heads, New South Wales / Coolangatta, Queensland (in Australia)
In Australia there is also:
* Albury, New South Wales / Wadonga, Victoria
