YES! Baby monitors CAN BE MONITORED IF you get one of the more inexpensive versions.

Get one that states on the package:

1) Spread Spectrum
2) Scrambled or Encrypted
3) Digitial

Any combo of this like Digitial Spread Spectrum would be best.

Baby monitors operate in one of two bands 46-49MHz and 902-928MHZ. Most of the inexpensive ones are nothing more than a radio transmitter with a receiver that any one can tune in and monitor.

Newer and more expensive models use the 902-928MHz band and use technology like more modern cordless phones like spread spectrum where the transmitter changes frequencies very quickly over a set period.

Fisher Price etc. all make versions that are not easily monitored over the more cheaper models. Read the package if you don't see "spread spectrum" "digital", "scrambled" or "encrypted" on the package DONT purchase it.

I am not sure about the police scanner but I do know after researching them that you have to get one the best fits you. The more remote controlled equipment you have you want more frequency channels on the monitor also if your neighbors has a baby monitor you could be listing to their baby instead of your own. Having more frequency to choose from can cut down on the chance of that happening and make sure you turn it off before you begin a privet conversation. We only turn ours on if we are going out to the pool or the yard while she is napping or sleeping other wise we keep it turned off and rely on good old fashioned hearing.

About a month ago, I turned on my Sony wireless headphones in order to play a video game - as soon as I did so, my neighbor's cell phone call came through on the headphones loud and clear.

If you have a question, then don't take a chance. I was very surprised by the fact I could hear my neighbor's conversation so clearly. I'm not sure what radio frequencies police scanners pick up, but if such an innocuous receiver could pick up a private conversation, then perhaps a police scanner could as well.

As with any transmsitting radio signal, yes it can be picked up. But the range is the key for that. Most baby montiors only have a 300 foot range. Some of them go further and can interfere with other people's nursery monitors.

The best monitor is of course the SIDS monitor by bebe sounds. Called the movement sensor with ound monitor. It detects baby's movement / breathing and if baby stops breathing or moving a very loud alarm goes off. It is awesome. And it comes with a portable parents unit.. and if baby is not in bed you can switch it to just sound without the movement.. it is a really neat item.

We had a baby monitor years ago (in the early/mid 90's) and we would occasionally pick up my neighbors cordless phone conversations on the receiver...and another neighbors baby monitor once in a while. But I am sure that the technology has improved since then, and it was so infrequent that it didn't hamper or make us feel insecure about using it. It was actually kinda funny...and we did tell our neighbors about it! The monitors are really great especially if you have a two story home and baby is asleep upstairs or you are trying to catch a quick shower before they wake up. Go ahead and buy it!!

My daughter's baby monitor picks up a neighbor's signal but only sporadically. Scanners are on different frequencys so I wouldn't worry too much about those.

yes it can be. my husband actually has herd baby monitors in from his scanner, also baby monitors can be picked up from another one..meaninng if i turn my baby monitor on channel 1 i can hear my neighbors house, so i ahve to use another channel for my house.
"The receiver in a radio scanner is typically quite a bit more sensitive than the receiver portion of your baby monitor, and the scanner can pick up the transmission from perhaps half a mile away."

Our baby monitor can pick up our neighbors baby monitor. They have also told us they have picked up our signal from ours. I would only leave it on when you need it at bed time....but make sure it's turned off at all other times for privacy. They are good to have though. I could hear my little one crystal clear when I needed it at night. I'm a heavy sleeper so a baby monitor was a must have.

I've picked up other peoples babies on mine...as for scanners i suppose if their in range....because we were picking up other people we used walkie talkies with the "privet" or "encrypted" feature we just put rechargeable batteries in em and taped the buttons down worked really great and much better reception only downside was we had to replace the batteries every few days
