No, but neither is it legal to record things from the TV.
Thats why you get adverts, and DJs talking over the records. It's to make sure you have an inferior product, and is supposed to discourage you.

Well there is no law to call it illegal....

I always understood that recording songs off the radio was legal as long as you didn't sell the tapes.

Yes. The radio being a public broadcasting service already pays fees to the owners of the songs.
