Do I have to buy the straight-up Nintendo version or can I use an adapter from another company.

Not talking about Wi-Fi, I'm talking about the connector that you plug your network cable into and plug it into your Wii's USB port, converter if you will.

The Nintendo version runs for about $29.99 at bestbuy.com, but I see some generic ones on eBay for like $10.

Yes, you need the Nintendo version. Don't bother, get a wireless router - it costs the same and you can use your connection throughout the house.
