I dont know if a bird counts, but the Jocotoco Antpitta in Ecuador is extremely rare. It was discovered by Robert Ridgely a few years ago in the southern Andes. A foundation was set up to protect this bird and other rare animals in Ecuador, setting up reserves all across the country ; http://www.fjocotoco.org/

The Tasmanian Tiger which has been extinct for about 60 years(although some still claim to see it). It is a marsupial with the head of a dog and the body has tiger stripes. Check out the pics, they really were cool.

Pink fairy armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus), if just for the name alone. They are headed towards extinction though.
