This is similar to nature vs nuture. I grew up in retail. My father has been a retail manager for the last 36 years. I have chosen to work in retail mgmt for the time being. To date, I have been successful. But, I can only go so far with what I have learned from him. A lot of his style is old school. It is acceptable for him (because he is well in to upper management). There is a lot to learn now that would have been rediculous when he was my age. We are far more customer focused now than we have ever been, and on that note, need to take care of our people in that same way. People are more sensative and have changed greatly in the last 30 to 50 years. As a 24 year old in Senior management in a retail store of a fortune 500 company, you need both. Some people are born to sell and others are born to lead. I find that great managers can be great sellers, but not so often the other way around.
