A mirror only reflects the light that has already been bounced off of an object and has travelled directly to the mirror. If the mirror is reflecting the top image of an object, the light reflected from the bottom of the object is blocked by the object itself, so can never reach the mirror.

It cannot reflect what is not in front of it. If you are looking at say, yourself, if you raise your foot and to the bottom of your foot toward the mirror, you can see the bottom of it. It has to do with the dimensions too, I think. Try goggle "how stuff works", "how things work", and/or "how everything works". These are sites to look at and may answer your question.
