yeah. i'm really bored. i didnt' really do what you asked... but... i messed around with it. i did another one that has more space around her face and is horizontal. it's a little more of what you're looking for. it wont load for some reason though. i'll try again later.

photoshop is pretty easy to use. you've just got to mess around with it for a little while and you'll get the hang of it. I havn't used it for something like this in more than a year... so this was good practice.. I'm sure you could spend more time on the photo and make it look a lot better.

First, I'd start with the way you take the picture. I had to do this for a drawing class in college and as an African American was worried as well. But if you want to use your original picture, this should still work.

Make sure the room is dark and that you have some kind of lamp. Any one would do as long as it's pretty bright. Make sure it's focused right on your face and not to the side or else it'll come out grayed and take many shots. That should be easier and more dramatic.

It should look like this:

Put it onto your computer and change it to gray scale or adjust the color in Image > Adjustments. I used stuff like Brightness/Contrast, Channel Mixer, Color Balance, and then selective color to turn the black background into a color that I wanted.

You might want to also mess around with other tools too to make it look exactly how you want it. Also, try layering your picture and changing the layer options.
I did it this way and my shots were very dramatic with it's lights and darks.

Here's what I got, I just added the stars in later for fun.

Go to "adjustments", then "color balance", and just slide the bars around 'til you get the look you want. All it is is color saturation.
