Hi, I'm trying to find information on San Diego. I've never been there but am looking to move there possibly. Can you tell me which areas to stay away from and which are okay. I'm looking at 1 bedrooms for 700 and under for my mom and I. Thanks.

Thanks for writing me. The only reason I chose San Diego is because all the 1 bedrooms were under 700. I'm on SSI and must find something cheap. My mom is on SSI as well. Our income is 1500. 750 is as high as we can go. Why are all the 1 bedrooms on craigslist 750 and under? too good to be true. Well, does anyone know of any other cheap cities that we could move to? Sacramento? Pittsburg?

There are occasional places in San Diego available for this price range, but they tend to be in older areas. Personally I recommend looking east of 54th Street. South of University is questionable, but north is a fairly nice area. There are also places in North Park, City Heights, Clairemont and La Mesa that are reasonable and nicer neighborhoods.

Here's a good website with more information on San Diego's top neighborhoods: http://sandiego.about.com/cs/neighborhoods/tp/top_hoods.htm

I found one place, Prime La Mesa Apartment
La Mesa, CA 91941
Contact: Joshua
Call: (888) 793-7368
that $720 a month. "Spacious, unfurnished, refrigerator, outdoor area, great area, near all.... Please call the toll free telephone number for more details. "

I asked this same question a few years ago before I moved here. :) It's like what everyone else has said so far...I haven't seen any 1 bedrooms for around $700. I live in the Mission Hills part of San Diego and my fiancee and I are paying $980 for a small 500 square foot cottage. Mission Hills is a very nice area to live in, as is Hilcrest, Mission Valley, and Fashion Valley, but all are expensive. El Cajon and La Mesa are cheaper, but you should really check out the neighborhoods there first because some aren't very nice. If you see any apartments on Craigslist for $700 they probably are too good to be true. You can probably find some decent 1 bedrooms for $800 or so, but closer to $1000 is more realistic for a nice neighborhood.

You're pretty much going to be in a slummy area for 700/month. You need to look upwards of at least $1000 to get anything even close to decent in San Diego. To get something newer, it's more like $1200. Sorry!

As far as areas, stay away from Logan Heights, Encanto, and Lemon Grove. Linda Vista isn't so hot, either.

San Diego is tough! I relocated to San Diego using craigslist.com - Stay away from Imperial Beach & many areas of San Ysidro - If you are looking to spend $700 you will have to be okay with sharing a home with other families in the safer areas. I rented a bedroom in a home for $800 in a goregous, safe, area of SD....

I fortunately haven't rented for a while, but $700/mo. is going to get you something very small in a "not so nice" neighborhood. $700 is what people pay for one room in an apartment with roommates.

$900-1,000 will get you a 2 bedroom in poorer areas.

Realistically, you need to think about $1500/mo.

Sorry to be a bummer.

Check out online rental places - you may be able to find something.

I would have to agree with everyone who answered you...I live in San Diego for many, many years..then recently moved to another state...Its very pricey for what you get..Your definately not going to find something for the price range...Realestate and rentals are just too dang high. It will be a miracle if you did..Its a great, great place to live everything you could ever want in a state, except for the cost of housing..Its pethetic for the person who wants to settle there unless your a millionaire. Sorry...

If you have that kind of budget, then California (except rural type areas) are not really that affordable. The midwest, southwest, and south are where the cost of living is low.

Not sure what your requirements are for where you want to live, but Austin, TX is pretty cheap on cost of living yet a lot of things are going on there.

Sorry, I don't think you'll find a place at that price in a nice area. If you can even find a rental available, they go for much more than that.
