A ton of different things -- certain medications, injuries, chemicals in the environment, or simply bad genes caused a malformation of the embryo (wasn't meant to be), etc.

A miscarriage usually results from a problem that occurrs at the instant of conception. All normal human cells have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs) but when the sperm or egg are "made" the chromosomes may not form right. Maybe they stick together and have too much genetic material or maybe the sperm or egg isnt fertilized when it is as fresh as it should be and the genetic material has just began to deteriorate a bit so that the fertilized egg isnt healthy. In this case the pregnancy begins to grow, but the baby is "sick" and the growth stops after a few weeks. Quite simply the baby is sick and dies and then the pregnancy will pass. Although there are many reasons why an early pregnancy will miscarry, this is probably the most common.

There are several things that could cause it.
It could be that your placenta was not formed correctly and it could not supply enough oxygen to the fetus. It could be a stressful even or a non performing uterus...it could be that science will never know the answer. Either way, it is a loss to the mother that is very hard to deal with. Apparently women who have had them grieve for the child as any mother would.
Unfortunately society does not grieve the same way and is not supportive...if you had miscarage please seek professional assistance in dealing with your normal feelings of loss!

Miscarriages are caused if the embryo is unhealthy or if the baby was going to be born with something wrong with it such as ceribal palsy.

many different causes, but usually they all point to the baby not being formed correctly, not being viable, and wouldn't be able to survive if carried to term.
Diseases, genetic abnormality, accidents and alcohol/drugs can cause the fetus to not develop correctly.

Yes, its true what others have said here... there are lots of reasons. Also, ask yourself... do you smoke, do you consume alcohol, do you do drugs? OR are you stressed? are you depressed? are you saddened by some news or tragedy? Lists goes on and on.
