Metaphors are more difficult to find, but similes are easy. Scan your book for the words "like", "as" or "than" and you should stumble across them. They are comparisions used to describe things.

If you want metaphors on a large scale (that items are symbolic of other things) then look at these:
1) Candy and his dog are a metaphor for what George must do to Lennie: kill him.
2) The fact that many of the characters are "deformed" (George mentally, Candy's missing hand, Crooks has a crooked spine) - this shows Steinbeck's idea that plans of humans often go awry (wrong) just like the humans themselves are imperfect.
3) The mouse and puppy that Lennie kills are metaphors for how humans often kill things that are important to them, either accidently or when trying to preserve them - it is directly related to how Lennie, in particular, will kill the men's dream and how George will end up killing Lennie.
