I have two deaf students in my college English class in writing. They cannot understand the novel we are reading. They read it but it doesn't make sense to them.
Are there any other educators who have experience with this?
I want to know if I can do anything to help them.
Thanks!

No, but thank you. :)
I am looking for a professor to answer please.
The students get interpreters and note-takers for class. They don't need interpreters. It is because they do not understand English in the way a hearing person does, because of having been taught sign language instead. The college does not provide for this. I am hoping for someone with a similar experience who may have tried something that works to help.
So, my original question still stands...
Thanks :)

I am a college professor, and have had hearing impaired students in my classes. I have never had the experience you are dealing with. Since your college/university does not provide any assistance for instructors dealing with students with disabilities, you might try talking with your local public schools to see if they have any resources (people/etc.) that might be able to give you suggestions. (Your two students had to come through some K-12 school, unless they were both home schooled.)

Also, there is Gallaudet University dedicated to the deaf community. Perhaps they have some resources available.

Good luck.

Suggest they go to student services (or whatever it is at your college) and ask for someone to assist.

There are usually people on staff (typically students on work study) that have the job of helping students with disabilities (interpreting, signing, taking notes, whatnot.) You can explain it to the interpreter and s/he can assist the students.
