Ordinary tobacco snuff will render a dog's smelling senses useless for about 3 to 4 hours. This has been a common method used by prisoners who wanted to escape from Nazi prisons during the war years. The prisoner would acquire a can of tobacco snuff and put a few drops here and there along their escape foot route and the dogs would lose their smell ability and could not follow the prisoner's path.
