It may be any number of things. Some ride on the way they were raised, "I can't help it..." Some may say that "everybody puts me in that sterotype anyway"...Personally, I think those excuses are hot garbage, but it all comes down to it being a choice: Saying "no" to temptation and choosing their family over somebody with "mo' curves than a Coke bottle." This not only applies for the black man, but any man. There are cultural expectations that have bets against black people: being raised in the ghetto, lack of positive male role models, glorified materialistic values (being a playa, bling-bling), etc...but I believe that there are diamonds in the roughest areas. And through the pressure to emerge as something more than another black statistic, maybe we can see more black men that can stay with one woman, take care of his children, AND hold down a good job; making a new positive statistic for others to aspire to.
(I know that these guys already exist, but it doesn't hurt to have more.)

Good question! I don't think it's an issue with black men finding it hard to stand up and take care of their responsibilities. I believe that it has to do with their priorities.Taking care of their family may not be a top priority for them. I'm not going to generalize all black men. However; this seems to be a trend in our community. My friends and I talk about this very thing all the time. I think that a lot of black men are so used to being taken care of, that when the time comes to take care of something other than themselves, they don't know how. Or maybe don't want to. This seems to be a major issue with the newer generation of black men. Lack of role models possibly? Not knowing the importance of family?

It's hard to be a black man in our society. There are so many broken homes. Families hurting for money. No one to TEACH them to be a man. Not enough good black men looked at as role models. They dont want to show weakness to the woman in their lives. They dont ask for help. Pride gets in the way. And, the stereotypes perpetuated by rap music (although I'm a fan) don't make it any better. They value material things and not character building things.

I don't think it is just black men that run from responsibilities. I think many factors contribute to the male (or female) leaving his/her family behind. Poverty for one, getting married and/or having children too young, the stress of raising children and supporting a family, unemployment. The list goes on and on. Responsibility is not bias nor is lack of.

I've only been black for 37 years, but I've never called everybody to me by saying, "My black laides and Men".

I also have not that many friends in my close circle who have ran away from responsibility.

Don't belive the hype. And thank you for keeping your ideas to yourself.
