Maybe like Agoraphobia? Yes.
By placing yourself in the anxiety-filled situation VERY gradually.
Maybe first by just leaving the house. Whatever place you are at in the anxiety, just expose yourself to it so gradually.
Then at night before you sleep, tell yourself aloud how well you did that day.

I wish you peace in your heart.

It depends on how sever it is. There are different types and degrees of social phobias. It could be anxiety. I know some people that have social anxiety. When they are it social situations they tend to get really anxious, start sweating, have dry mouth, heart is racing, etc. I recommend seeing someone, maybe a school psychologist or a psychiatrist. You cannot overcome it in one day. First you have to figure out what the underlying cause of your social anxiety. They will work through it with you, that is what they are there for. Then you move on from there. Please go see someone because if you let this go on for too long it can take over your life. Once you see someone you can get on some meds, which will help. Don't be afraid to get help. In the meantime look up information on social phobias.
According the DSM-IV* -Social phobias:
1. Marked and persistent fear of social or performance situations involving exposure to unfamiliar people or possible scrutiny by others, lasting at least six months. Concern about humiliating or embarrassing oneself.
2. Anxiety usually produced by exposure to the social situation.
3. Recognition that the fear is excessive or unreasonable.
4. Avoidance of feared situations.
5. Significant distress or impairment.
* Diagnostice and Statictical Manual of Mental Disorders.
Sorry about the novel, I majored in psychology.

The only way to overcome social phobia is to be more outgoing. You just have to put yourself out there and not be afraid what people will think of you. Usually social phobia is just a state of mind that must be overcome. It is usually just an exaggeration of what could possibly happen and once you get past that you will be fine.

I have a little social phobia myself, I think that if i go to a crowded party , as long as if im with a whole lotta friends to talk to during the moment, and laughter, shall help me overcome next time im by myself in a social situation.
Well of course it has to repeat next time until you feel you'll do fine in a social situation your self.

i used to be really shy. i dont know if i would call it social phobia but what i did was look for things i had in common with people. my friends really helped me to open up. getting a job in retail also helped because i had no choice but to talk to people. another thing that can help is joining a team, organization or club. it will bring you closer to people you have things in common with and maybe eventually you will open up to more and more people until you are not afraid to speak with anyone.

I wish I did.
In the meantime, I just stay home and never invite anyone over.
If you get a good answer and it helps you, would you be kind enough to e-mail it to me?
